As we approach the dawn of another homeschooling year, it's time to gear up for an exciting adventure in education. Whether you're a seasoned homeschooling pro or just starting on this educational journey, the key to success lies in a well-prepared and organized classroom. In this blog post, we'll delve into some essential tips and tricks for setting up your homeschool classroom for 2023, ensuring a productive and enjoyable learning environment for both you and your children. 1. Define Your Learning Goals: Begin by outlining your educational goals for the year. What subjects will you cover? What specific learning outcomes do you want to achieve? Having clear objectives will guide your curriculum choices and classroom setup and whether or not you'll even be setting up a classroom space as oppose to free schooling at any picnic bench, library space or beach blanket. Your classroom can be anywhere! So if you and your family are read for it, think outside the box & enjoy your freedom of choice.
2. Choose a Dedicated Space: Select a designated area in your home for homeschooling. It could be a spare room, a corner of the living room, or even a well-organized section of your child's bedroom. This helps create a structured learning environment. We use to use the kitchen table, the couch, the stairs, our desks or bedroom floors to learn, While its wonderful to be flexible once I set up a dedicated "school" space it was a game changer. We always knew where to put our hands on our books, manipulatives, pencils, erasers and all the other wonderful trinkets that make a classroom run. We knew where to find them at the beginning of the day and we also knew where their home was at the end of the day, calming the clutter & chaos by everything having a home in our dedicated classroom. It's also wonderful to have a space to spread out our ideas and cut outs when doing big projects like preparing for the home school geography fair and not having to clean everything up at every meal time or when guests are coming. We could just close off our classroom space and return to our project later, which was a wonderful benefit. So consider converting a whole room, a closet or any area you choose to be called your homeschool classroom. Oh, I also enjoy being able to hang my boys school accomplishments, art work & favourite things on the walls.

3. Organize Supplies: Gather your teaching materials, textbooks, workbooks, art supplies, and any other resources you'll need. Consider using storage bins, shelves, or a bookcase to keep everything neatly organized and easily accessible. We love the klaxx shelves from ikea for their versatility, they have cubbies and I love organizing our things on this amazing storage solution. Check out all the ways you can use it in this post here. If you've got plastic storage drawers theyre great for rounding up all the markers, pencil crayons, crayons and more, when its time to use them just pull the whole drawer out, plop it on the table and let their imaginations run wild, to clean up just slide the drawer back into the frame and off you go.

4. Create a Daily Schedule: Establish a daily routine that includes dedicated learning hours. A consistent schedule helps both you and your child know what to expect each day and fosters a sense of routine and responsibility. I like to make up a wipeable chart for each child, it includes hygiene, chores, school subjects & daily activities like playgroups and more, As we move through the day they are able to check each activity off and it helps keep them engaged and moving through various tasks, even the ones that are less than fun. :)

5. Set Up Workstations: Depending on your child's age and learning needs, create different workstations within your homeschool classroom. These might include a reading nook, a science experiment table, and a writing desk. Each station should be equipped with the necessary materials. This sounds great right? well truth be told, our house just isn't big enough for those kind of goals lol. If yours is and you want to do it, go for it! But for us spaces have to do a double duty so our reading nook is our bed or the couch, we have desks, an art table and the local park's grassy area is our science experiment table, art space, gym, social circle and so much more. Do what works for your family and makes the most cents in your space, don't get burnt out by pinterest ideas but just make a home of discovery, safety and learning for your child.

6. Personalize the Space: Make the classroom inviting by adding personal touches. Hang up artwork, inspirational quotes, or a whiteboard for jotting down daily tasks. Personalization can create a warm and inspiring learning environment.

7. Use Technology Wisely: Integrate technology into your classroom when appropriate. Consider educational apps, online resources, and interactive learning platforms that can supplement your curriculum and engage your child. When my children were small we used ABCMouse, ReadingEggs, & Noggin to make learning fun & playful. They would only get a few 30 minute sessions a week but sometimes the incentive was a great motivator for less desirable work. Now that they're a wee bit older we supplement their pen and paper work with amazing youtube channels like ArtHubForKids, Cooking shows, DiscoveryKids, Love Nature and a few others that inspire their creativity, curiosity and discovery of new ideas and places.

8. Incorporate Break Areas: Include cozy corners for breaks and relaxation. A comfy reading chair, a bean bag, or a small indoor play area can help recharge your child's energy during study breaks. 9. Stay Organized: Maintain a well-organized homeschooling area. Use labels, storage bins, and a planner to keep track of lessons, assignments, and progress. Staying organized reduces stress and enhances the learning experience. 10. Flexibility Is Key: Remember that homeschooling allows for flexibility. Be open to adjusting your classroom setup and routines based on your child's evolving needs and interests. 11. Involve Your Child: Encourage your child's input in the classroom setup. Let them choose some decor, layout, or materials. When they have a say in their learning space, they're more likely to feel motivated and engaged. 12. Seek Support: Connect with homeschooling communities, both online and locally. Sharing ideas, experiences, and resources with other homeschooling parents can be invaluable. Conclusion: As you prepare your homeschool classroom for 2023, keep in mind that the key to a successful homeschooling experience is creating a conducive and enjoyable learning environment. By defining your goals, staying organized, and fostering a love of learning, you'll be well on your way to a rewarding homeschooling journey. Embrace the flexibility that homeschooling offers, and remember that every day is an opportunity for discovery and growth in your unique educational adventure. Happy homeschooling!
13. Field Trips: Don't discount the amazing opportunities and experiences that await you just outside the classroom door, field trips are wonderful ways to engage children in multiple learning opportunities at once, engage with people from all walks of life, ages & experiences, learn hands on skills, discover new passions or interests & see the stories from textbooks come alive. We love field trips and I love that we get to discover the world together through experiences and play. I remember taking my boys from Toronto, Ontario to Halifax, Nova Scotia to visit the museum of natural history and the museum of immigration where many have arrived for the first time on Canadian soil. We were able to see, feel, touch & immerse ourselves in the experiences of the people who came before us in ways a book cannot do.
